what to wear

We are so excited that your session is on the books! We know planning outfits can be one of the harder parts of getting photos taken, but we hope to make this as easy as possible and take as much as we can off your plate. Please know these are just suggestions based on the way we photograph with natural lighting. We want your final photos to represent who you are, so if you feel more comfortable not following these suggestions we understand that and can make it work!

colors

If you feel more comfortable planning your outfits, we have several suggestions that we recommend.

The colors you choose are the most important part of your outfits. We shoot with lots of sunlight, so any color you wear will bounce back onto your skin tones. Bright colors will reflect causing you to look red, blue, green, etc. We recommend neutrals, earth tones, and pastels. Our favorites are listed here for the best creamy skin tones!

Our favorite outfit "recipe" is choosing 2-3 neutral colors (cream, white, tan, brown, or gray) and mixing and matching those. If you do love color we recommend choosing just one pastel or earthy shade and mixing that in along with two neutral tones!

WOMEN

FAVORITE STORES:

We always love long flowy maxi dresses. They are classic, timeless, and not a trend that will fade with time. They are also forgiving for all body types and the texture photographs beautifully. We recommend choosing your own dress first and then coordinating the rest of the family around it!

Avoid spray tanning before your session. It will make you look orange on camera no matter the base color. We can typically tone this down in editing if needed.

Patterns are great for any outfit but we prefer small dainty patterns to keep the focus on yourself and not your clothing. (Think tiny stripes, dainty florals, small dots, etc)

Things to avoid: chippy nail polish, watches, bright, bold, or large patterns, rubber bands on wrists.

HAIR + MAKEUP

Professional hair and makeup make a huge difference in front of the camera. We highly recommend treating yourself and getting this done before your session! (Side note: sometimes professional make-up can feel like “a lot” in person but it will not come across this way on camera!)

Men

We recommend leaving the work attire at home! Our photos are typically casual in nature: tromping through fields, throwing kids in the air, etc. We have found that dads are far more comfortable in casual attire. We love a simple pocket tee or henley tee paired with neutral chino pants.

Things to avoid: watches, phones in pockets, baggy clothes.
